Ian Sauer is a member of the Australian Landcare Council and a dryland sheep and cattle producer from Pipers Brook in Northern Tasmania where he manages the family farm.
Ian has been involved in Landcare and Landcare issues for the past 15 years. He started his involvement being a member of the East Tamar Landcare group, and chairing the award winning Tamar Valley Weed Strategy.
At present he is Chairman of the Tasmanian FarmBis State Planning Group, the National Gorse Task Force, and the Tamar Natural Resource Management Strategy. Ian is also a member of the EnviroFund State Assessment Panel, and the Tamar Valley Branch of the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association.
Part of Ian’s farming philosophy is that Landcare is part of normal farming systems and processes, and not an add on process. Farmers involved in Landcare either formally or informally continually demonstrate that profitability and sustainability go hand in hand as part of a farming system, delivering both private and public benefit.
Ian has a particular focus on sustainable profitable agriculture, and searching for efficient ways to deliver natural resource management outcomes, with profit, education and consistency as drivers for change. In particular he is aware of the environmental and financial cost of weeds, and is a tireless worker for a better funded and coordinated policy for weeds management and eradication.
